The Long Reef sauna might be cooked The portable Finnish sauna at Long Reef, Cedar & Salt, has its Council permit pulled from tomorrow despite 1,400 happy customers and zero complaints, all because Crown land rules don't have a category for "sauna business." Councillors vote next Tuesday on whether to grant a winter extension, so the timing is, ironically, freezing.

The Gopher opens under the Corso this Friday The Gopher, the Irish-inspired basement bar taking over The Old Manly Boatshed site under the Corso, opens Friday night with live music, cocktails and full late-night underground energy. Designed by Manly local Matt Clifton (the brains behind The Cumberland), it's the long-awaited replacement for one of Manly's most missed late-night spots.
The 8km walk that ends at the pub STRYDE4 Day is an 8km walk from Manly Lagoon to Harbord Diggers next Tuesday, with 15 activation zones along the way (ice baths in utes, silent disco, bucket golf on the sand) and 100% of funds going to the 30 charities you pick from. Tickets are $105, walk kicks off 8:30am, and yes, it finishes at the pub.

MANLY FROM THE PAST
The Night a French Ship Crashed Onto Manly Beach
On the night of 24 May 1906, the French barque Vincennes ran stern-first onto Manly Beach in an easterly gale. She was sailing from Yokohama to Sydney carrying nothing but ballast, and her captain mistook the lights on the beach for the entrance to Sydney Harbour. Nobody was hurt, but the 60-metre, three-masted steel ship was stuck on the sand for nine days. It became the biggest tourist attraction in Sydney. Crowds were so enormous that extra ferries had to be put on from Circular Quay, and police were called to manage the chaos. After multiple failed attempts with tugboats, the Vincennes was finally pulled free at 3am on 2 June. She was repaired at Mort's Dock and sailed on to New Caledonia. In the famous photo, you can see St Patrick's Seminary looming in the background behind the beached ship.
