YOUR WEEKEND GUIDE

Four-day weekend. Four. Days. If you're reading this on Friday morning already in board shorts with a coffee in hand, we salute you. The Monday-back-at-it crew are not built like us.

The mercury's dropping but we're in denial about it. Ocean's still swimmable if you commit in the first three seconds and don't think about it. Anyone who's started wearing a spring suit already, no judgement, but also yes judgement.

Two-up is undefeated as a pub game. Change our minds.

Get amongst it, Manly.

TWO-UP

📍 Where to throw the kip this Saturday

With Anzac Day upon us (and falling on a Saturday, which means the rings are gonna be extra rowdy), we thought we'd save you the group chat debate and call it: here's where to post up for Two-Up this weekend.

3. Mona Vale Hotel If you're already up that end, the Monnie's the move. Proper peninsula pub energy, more locals than randoms, and you can actually hear your mates talk. Only catch is it's a trek if you're starting in Manly, and the ring's a bit more loose than ceremonial.

2. Dee Why RSL Does Anzac Day the way it should be done, big ring, good mix of old diggers and families, feels like the real deal. Runs out of steam a bit as the arvo goes on though, so treat it as a stop rather than a destination.

1. Hotel Steyne C'mon. The Corso empties straight into the Steyne after the march and it absolutely doesn't stop. Upstairs balcony is a scene, ring goes all day, nowhere else on the beaches comes close. Fair warning though, get there early or you're queuing 20 deep at the bar and standing for 8 hours.

Lime bikes land in Manly: Lime e-bikes officially launched across Manly, Fairlight, Balgowlah, Manly Vale and Queenscliff this week, with mandatory parking zones near the beach, Shelly Beach and the ferry terminal to keep things tidy.

Manly Fun Run on crutches: The annual Rotary Manly Fun Run returned to The Corso on Sunday, and LocalKind's Acting CEO Daniel Fields tackled the 2km course on crutches after breaking his ankle during a training run, raising money for the Northern Beaches charity as it works to close a $200k funding gap.

MANLY FROM THE PAST

In 1882, William Bede Dalley, the NSW Attorney-General and son of two convicts, bought a patch of land on Constitution Hill overlooking Manly Cove and built himself a full-blown Gothic Revival castle. He called it Marinella, meaning "home by the sea," but everyone just called it Dalley's Castle. It towered over the village for decades, but Dalley himself only lived there about three years before dying in 1888 at age 57. After that it became a boarding house, then a grammar school, then slowly fell apart. In 1939 it was demolished and replaced with Housing Commission flats, ironically also named Marinella. There was strong local opposition, but it was too late. Today, a single sandstone wall with two gargoyles, a dragon and a hunting dog, is all that survives on Sydney Road. Walk past and look up, you'll spot them keeping watch.
